The Last Span
The hammer rang once. A spark jumped off the anvil and did not go out. It waited. They followed.
The ferry horn blew once. Lan and Beto were back on Gullwick.
Three spans held. One gap was left.
"Eight planks, and not one fewer," said Poppa Pike.
The Commons store was empty. Things went out all summer. Nothing came back.
Lan wrote a rule by herself. EVERYBODY MUST GIVE TWO PLANKS. She pinned it on the door.
"It's my only one," said Vera.
Doors shut. Nobody gave.
"Gather round, gather round!" said Gully. "Everyone gets a turn to talk." Gully rang the bell.
Everyone talked, one at a time.
"Fair for the giver too, mind," said Mason. "Spares only. Never your last."
Ambo brought a big old book. "Write what you take. Write what you give back."
The first page was in a child's writing. Its torn corner was sewn up. A tiny hammer was drawn by the stitches.
"Children were here before us," said Beto.
So Lan wrote the rule, but only what everyone said. Take what you need. Put back what you can spare. Never your last. Write it in the book.
Eleven homes said yes. Vera said yes last. Twelve!
"Spares! Who's got spares?" said Gilly. This time Lan counted first. Two, one, three, two. "Eight planks!" said Lan.
"Everybody lays one," said Poppa Pike.
The bridge was whole! FAIR. LIKELY. ENOUGH. The last plank said OURS.
The ferry horn blew twice. Home.
The spark dimmed to a warm dot and settled back on the anvil. The Green was just the Green again.
Back on the Green
Lan's family made a rule for the biscuit tin. Everyone had a say. Tí drew it.
Tell the story back to someone. Why did Lan's rule not work?

The Honest Page
Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?
True
- Groups that share something, like a fishing ground, a forest or a water supply, often look after it best when the people who use it make the rules together. Source
- Shared stores that work usually keep track of who takes what, out in the open where everyone can see. Source
- Two, one, three and two planks make eight. Eleven households and one more make twelve.
Stretched
- The island agrees its rule in one afternoon on the beach. What we simplified: Real communities usually take many meetings, and keep changing their rules as they learn what works.
Made up
- Gullwick, its Commons store, its book and its talking islanders are made up.
