Next to Hark in the warm dark of the roots stands a guide named Glance.

Glance is your eyes — grown into a friend.

Glance almost never reads a thing the slow way, word by word. Glance looks — and the whole shape of it arrives at once. Where the pieces sit. What lines up and what doesn't. Which square is empty in a grid that's nearly full. Glance can walk into a messy room and feel, instantly, the one thing that's out of place, the way you feel a crooked picture on a wall.

"Words come to me in a line, one at a time," Glance says. "But a picture comes all together. And when I can see the shape of something, I already half-understand it."

A kid once brought Glance a page of instructions that had turned into a wall of gray words. "I've read it four times," the kid said. "It won't stay in my head."

Glance didn't read it a fifth time. Glance turned the page over, took a pencil, and drew it — a little map, boxes and arrows, this step leading to that one. And the kid leaned in, and their whole face changed. "Oh," they said. "It's a loop. I couldn't see it was a loop." The words had been hiding the shape. The moment the shape came out where the eyes could reach it, the whole thing stood still and made sense.

That is the heart of what Glance knows. When something won't stay put in words, make it a picture. Draw it, map it, line it up in space. Your eyes can hold a shape far longer than a sentence, and inside the shape the meaning is already waiting.

Glance feels most like Glance in the small bright instant a pattern snaps into place — when a scatter of dots turns out to be a spiral, when a jumble of numbers lines up into a staircase, when the crooked thing finally goes straight. It's a quick, clean, there-it-is feeling, like the last piece of a puzzle sliding home. Glance lives for that click.

05 Closing
Glance beat 5 of 5

You have a bit of Glance in you. Everyone does — but in some people it runs deep. If you'd rather see a diagram than read a paragraph, if you notice when a shelf is one book out of order, if maps and charts feel friendlier than blocks of text — that isn't a gap where reading should be. That's Glance, strong in your roots. Your eyes are doing real thinking.

Say it the way Glance does, out loud: "Glance doesn't read it — Glance sees the shape of it, and the shape shows the way."

Then look for the shape. It's usually closer than the words.
