Across the Table

The story in three lines. Flitter hides the Moonstone under one of three leaves. Tí lifts one leaf at a time: under the first is Ursa the bear, who blocks the path; under the second is tiny Puck, who tickles Ursa home. Tí lifts the last leaf himself and finds the Moonstone.

The five nights. Night one, just listen. Night two, pause before the bold last words and let your child say them. Night three, join in the refrains. Night four, stop before each leaf and ask "who do you think is under it?" Night five, let them tell it to a toy.

One thing to do at the table. Three cups and a button. Hide the button. Take turns lifting one cup at a time. Then swap who hides.

The grown-up layer. Young children love a secret that is kept and then found. Waiting for a turn, and not peeking, are real skills at this age. The "smallest stops the biggest" rule is old: many hidden-piece games give the smallest piece one special power. HollowTots plays the same game.
