Something in the Pocket

The idea: a pocket's shape fits a partner.

Who is in this book

Every recurring character has a short tune, so you can tell who is on stage before a word is said. The tunes play only when you tap, and the Reading Access sound switch turns them off.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • Many proteins have a pocket shaped to fit one small partner, such as a metal or a sugar. Source
  • A partner eight squares across fits a pocket eight squares deep with no gap.
  • A prediction made from the protein chain alone does not show small partners that are not part of the chain. Source

Stretched

  • Real pockets are not measured in squares. What we simplified: Scientists measure in ångströms, tiny units; squares on graph paper make the fit easy to see.

Made up

  • Margit, Kemi and their protein are made up.

Tell it back

Tell the story in your own words: who was there, what went wrong, and what they found out. Then the fourth pair goes on your belt.
