The Egg That Stayed

The idea: some things go back, some things stay.

Read it

Five nights, one book

Little children love the same story again. Read this one five nights running, with a different job each night.

  1. Morning 1 — listen.
  2. Morning 2 — say the last words.
  3. Morning 3 — guess: back, or stay?
  4. Morning 4 — try one at breakfast.
  5. Morning 5 — tell it to a toy.

Who is in this book

Every recurring character has a short tune, so you can tell who is on stage before a word is said. The tunes play only when you tap, and the Reading Access sound switch turns them off.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • Ice melts into water, and the water freezes back into ice. That change can go back. Source
  • Cooking changes an egg for good. The clear part turns white and cannot turn clear again. Source
  • Toasting bread browns it, and it stays brown. Source

Stretched

  • In the book the dough rolls back into a ball. What we simplified: Soft dough can be rolled back into a ball, but once it is baked it stays. The book only shows the soft part.

Made up

  • The talking owl, fox and hedgehog are made up. Real cooking needs a grown-up at the stove.

Tell it back

Tell the story to a toy, or to a grown-up. When you have, the grown-up taps the button, and a printable two-bowl sorting card goes on your belt.
