Across the Table
Write a correction. Think of something you said that turned out to be wrong, however small: a wrong time, a wrong name, a wrong score. Write a correction the way newspapers do, in three parts: what we said, what is right, and how the mistake happened. Read it aloud.
Before chapter 3. Which number is wrong?
The answer. The total. The cash book showed 85 cakes at £4, which is £340. The paper said £430: the 3 and the 4 were swapped when the story was typed. That is £90 too much. A swap like this has a name: a transposition error.
The grown-up layer. Children often learn that mistakes should be hidden. Good newsrooms do the opposite, and readers trust them more for it. NewsForge has Deed (go to the original) and Errata (corrections).
Pause to think. Why did Danya say "we got it wrong" instead of "Beto got it wrong"?
For the ride home. Ask: what is the hardest thing about saying "I was wrong"?
