Across the Table

Play "outside the frame". Take a photo of something ordinary, such as a corner of the kitchen, very close up. Show it to someone and ask them to guess what it is and where. Then show the wider photo. Talk about how much the crop changed what they believed.

Before chapter 3. Is the fox real?

The answer. Yes. Three checks: no older copy of the photo existed anywhere, so it was not lifted from somewhere else; the person who took it, the caretaker, was found; and his wider photo showed an open window with muddy paw prints on the sill. Danya's first instinct, "it looks fake", was a claim that needed checking too.

The grown-up layer. Children are taught to doubt, and that is good. But doubting everything is as easy as believing everything. Checking is the skill. NewsForge has Source, Verify and Uncrop.

Pause to think. When have you been sure about something you had not checked?

For the ride home. Ask: what would make you change your mind about a photo?
