Across the Table

Play the Stop page. Read chapter 5 aloud and stop there. Everyone at the table decides print, hold or kill, and says why. Then read chapter 6.

The answer. Hold the rumour; print what you can check. Nine people repeating one person is one source. The photo has no date, so it proves nothing about now. The parks office is the one who would actually know.

Walk a rumour back. Next time someone at home says "everyone says…", draw the chain on paper together: who told whom, back to the first person. Count the sources at the end of the chain, not the arrows.

The grown-up layer. Fact-checkers call this circular reporting: one claim that looks like many. SIFT (Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, Trace claims) is a short habit children can use on anything. Bran is likeable on purpose. The deadline makes the tension, so nobody has to be a villain. NewsForge and TruthQuest practise the same moves.

For the ride home. Ask: what would have made the rumour true enough to print?
