For grown-ups

TongueQuest is built around a child interviewing their family. It needs you: the child asks a parent, grandparent or older cousin for three sayings and ten everyday words, and writes them into a family phrase book.

Each saying gets three layers: how it sounds at home (spelled the way your family spells it), word-for-word (what each word literally says, which is where translations go wrong), and what it really means (what your family means by it, and when they use it). The quiz is built from your family’s own sayings, and the word-for-word reading is the trap. The phrase book can be printed or downloaded to share.

TongueQuest never generates a translation. You and your family are the experts. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere, and the phrase book is a file you keep and can share. TongueQuest is the 9–14 rung of the Home-Tongue family (TongueTots, TonguePals, TongueQuest, TongueDojo), which share one list of your family’s words.

What it never does

  • No ads and nothing to buy (see the privacy page).
  • No account needed: what is practised stays in this browser, on this device.
  • No streaks, timers to beat, points to chase or leaderboards.
  • No chat, and nothing anyone types is sent anywhere.

We describe what TongueQuest is designed to practise (ages 9–14). We do not claim it raises test scores.
