For grown-ups

English has 26 letters and about 44 sounds. PhonemeForge teaches the sound system itself, described the way a linguist would: where in the mouth each sound is made, how the air gets out, and whether the voice buzzes.

Three questions describe any consonant. Voicing asks whether the vocal folds buzz (a hand on the throat for “zzz”, then “sss”, is the test at the table). Place asks where the air is shaped. Manner asks how the air gets out. The practice rooms are Describe, Minimal pairs and Read the IPA. There is also a chart of all 44 sounds, a page on why English spelling drifted from its sounds, and a heritage track for the Vietnamese, Hindi and Spanish sound systems.

Every answer is worked out from the sound chart. Nothing is timed.

What it never does

  • No ads and nothing to buy (see the privacy page).
  • No account needed: what is practised stays in this browser, on this device.
  • No streaks, timers to beat, points to chase or leaderboards.
  • No chat, and nothing anyone types is sent anywhere.

We describe what PhonemeForge is designed to practise (ages 15–18). We do not claim it raises test scores.
