The capstone and the viva

A capstone is the stone laid on top to finish a wall or an arch. Universities borrowed the word for the last, biggest project of a course. Defending your work out loud is older still: the viva voce, Latin for "with the living voice", is how many universities have examined a doctoral thesis for centuries.

One thing to hold: A process record: every entry you made, the dead ends included, kept in order so you can show how you got there.

Why it matters: Saying how you got somewhere, and answering questions about it, shows what you understand better than the finished thing alone.
