Goldie is a sunny blob of yellow paint, bright as a buttercup and cheerful as a chick. Goldie is never in a hurry.
Bluebell the blue wants to be green today. "Pour all the yellow in!" says Bluebell. "Quick!"
"Ooh, not all at once," says Goldie, smiling. "Let's go one dab at a time. Then we can look."
So Goldie adds ONE little dab of yellow to Bluebell in the mixing well.
Dab.
Then Goldie stops, very still, and looks. "Look," whispers Goldie. "You're a tiny bit green now. Like the sea by the shore."
One more dab. Dab. Goldie stops. Goldie looks. "Now you're green like a leaf."
One more dab. Dab. Stop. Look. "Now you're green like a lime, all bright and fresh!"
"I like this green best," says Bluebell happily. "If we had poured it all in, we would have missed the in-between greens."
"That's my idea," says Goldie. "One dab, then stop and look. You see every little change, and you get to choose when it's just right."
That is Goldie's sunny idea.
Add one dab at a time, then stop and look.
A grown-up can paint too! Take turns: you add one dab, then you both stop and look. "What changed?" Then the other one adds a dab. Stop. Look. Say what you see.
When the greens are all made, Goldie glows softly on the tray, calm and content. "Looking is the best part," Goldie says. "Slow and bright. That's how I like it."
One dab. Stop. Look. That's Goldie.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Goldie says: add ONE dab at a time, then …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

The PaintTots ensemble

-
Bluebell
No mistakes in paint - Bluebell the blue paint, whose muddy brown mix is not wrong but new: keep going and see what it can become
