Cousin openers

For a table of children who barely know each other: start with something you can only do together. Ten minutes, a few things from the kitchen drawer, then put the screen away.

🗼 Twenty-Card Tower

10 minutes · ages 5+ · 2–8 children

You need

  • 20 index cards (or old playing cards)
  • one strip of tape, as long as your hand

How

  1. Agree where the tower stands.
  2. Build it as tall as you can in ten minutes. Folding cards is allowed.
  3. Measure it against a grown-up: a knee, a hip, a shoulder?

Jobs: one child holds the tape and decides where it goes · one folds · one checks the tower still stands. Swap jobs halfway.

✏️ One-Pencil Island

10 minutes · ages 4+ · 2–8 children

You need

  • one sheet of paper
  • ONE pencil (only one)

How

  1. Draw an island outline together.
  2. Pass the pencil round. Each turn, add one thing and say what it is.
  3. When every child has had four turns, name the island together.

Rule: you may only draw on your turn, and you may not rub out someone else’s thing — build on it.

🥄 Ten-Spoon Bridge

10 minutes · ages 6+ · 2–6 children

You need

  • ten spoons
  • two books of the same height
  • one apple (or an orange)

How

  1. Put the books one hand apart.
  2. Talk for two minutes first: no spoons touched until there is a plan everyone agrees with.
  3. Build a bridge from book to book that holds the apple for a count of ten.

Jobs: one child is the planner, one the builder, one the tester who places the apple. Nobody does two jobs.

Why a joint task: working together on one small goal with few materials is a promising way to warm up a group of children who don’t know each other yet. It isn’t a test, and there’s nothing to win.
