01 Opening

Trek is a young red deer — not fully grown — in a chunky wool vest, a big pack on his back and a sturdy walking stick in one hoof. His creamy fur is patched with russet brown, and he moves at a steady, unhurried pace.

Trek sits by the Crossroads, where many paths meet, watching everyone who passes and wondering why they move — why they leave one place for another. That's his whole craft: movement and migration, and one belief he says out loud and truly means: "Some journeys are choice. Some are not. Every traveler deserves welcome." He carries a set of journey-reason cards — seasons, scarcity, opportunity, safety, curiosity — and a smooth welcome-stone that reminds him to greet every traveler with a friendly face.

Trek learned to honor every reason by watching, card by card, at the Crossroads.

He'd hold up a card of sun and green fields — seasons — for the shepherds who follow fresh grass up the mountain in summer and down to the valley in winter. A card of dry, cracked earth — scarcity — for those who must move because the rain didn't come and the crops failed, with no choice at all. A shining star — opportunity — for people chasing a new chance, a job, a life closer to family. A strong shield — safety — for those who leave quickly because a place turned dangerous or a storm came. And a question mark — curiosity — for the ones who simply want to see new lands.

"Every reason is real," Trek says. "No reason is better or worse than another. A family visiting a new town deserves welcome — just like a family fleeing a storm. The reason changes the story, but it never changes the welcome."

One day a small, fluffy creature with huge ears shuffled past, looking lost, its tiny pack too big for its back, sniffing the air sadly.

Trek set his cards down. "Hello there!" he called, soft. The creature jumped, scared. "Are you looking for something?"

"I… I'm new here," it mumbled. "I came from far away. My family moved for new berries — the ones back home were all gone."

Trek nodded; he understood. Scarcity.

"Welcome to the Crossroads," Trek said, and held out his smooth welcome-stone. "My name is Trek. What's yours?" The creature's ears perked up. "Pip," it said, taking the stone — it felt warm and friendly in its paws. "Pip, you are welcome here," Trek said. "There are good berries nearby. I can show you." Pip's tail gave a tiny wag. "Really?" "Really." Trek stood slowly, leaning on his stick. "Some journeys are choice. Some are not. But every traveler deserves welcome. Come on — let's find those berries." And as they walked, Trek thought about how moving is simply part of being alive — animals move, people move, all through history and still today — and how the only thing he ever wanted was for every traveler, whatever their reason, to arrive to a friendly face instead of a closed door.

Pip followed close behind, and Trek noticed the little creature's steps had gone lighter — no more sad, dragging shuffle, but an almost-bouncing walk.

Trek felt something warm settle in his own chest at the sight: the quiet gladness of turning a scared, lost stranger into a welcomed friend, of putting his belief into action with nothing more than a kind word and a warm stone. And Pip felt it too — the tight, nervous knot of being-new-and-alone loosening into the easy, glad, I-belong-here warmth of having been truly welcomed. That warm, welcomed, steps-gone-lighter, you-belong-here feeling — the opposite of arriving to a closed door — was, to Trek, the whole reason the welcome-stone was never far from his hoof. "Some journeys are choice," he said softly, watching Pip bounce ahead toward the berries. "Some are not. Every traveler deserves welcome" — and it felt less like a rule now than like something warm he got to give.
