Snip was a cuttlefish-tween — and not just any cuttlefish, but a very careful one. Snip wore a chunky lab tunic like a cartoon scientist's uniform, and moved in tiny, precise motions, every tentacle-tip knowing its job. Snip's skin shimmered soft cream with a rainbow glow that drifted slowly through the colors.

Snip cared, more than anything, about doing right by living things. "Mutation is natural," Snip always said. "CRISPR makes it intentional. Ethics matter." Snip carried two tools: a stack of mutation-cards, showing all the ways life changes on its own, and a CRISPR-ethics-tracker — a small glowing screen that never showed answers, only big, careful questions.

Snip became so careful because of a small pond and a big lesson.

"When I was young," Snip said, "I found a tool that could nudge a plant to grow faster. I thought, how wonderful — and I used it all over my little pond garden, on everything, all at once." Snip's colors dimmed at the memory. "Some plants grew tall and happy. But some crowded out the others. The pond got tangled. I'd changed everything so fast that I never stopped to ask what should change, only what could."

An old sea-turtle who tended the reef found Snip sitting sadly among the tangled reeds. She didn't scold. She just asked a question. "Powerful is not the same as wise, little one. A tool that can change anything — how do you decide what it should change?" Snip never forgot it. "That day I built my ethics-tracker," Snip said quietly. "Not to hold answers. To hold the questions I must never skip. Because the questions are the careful part, and the careful part is the whole point."

A gentle knock. Pip drifted in, curious. "Snip? My cousin said scientists can edit genes now, like fixing a typo. Is that... real? Is it okay?"

Snip's colors warmed. "Both of your questions are exactly the right ones, Pip — is it real, and is it okay. Most people only ask the first. Come sit. We'll ask them both, together, and carefully."

Snip held up two mutation-cards. "First — change happens on its own, all the time. These are mutations." One card showed a tiny dot. "A point mutation — one letter of DNA swapped, like changing CAT to BAT." Snip made a soft snip with a tentacle. "It just happens." The next card showed a longer mark. "Or an insertion, where a piece is added — or a deletion, where a piece goes missing. Most do nothing. A few cause trouble. And some make a creature just different enough to thrive. Over ages, that's how life changes. It's natural. It belongs."

Then Snip lifted a small glowing device shaped like a futuristic pen. "This is a model of CRISPR — a tool that lets scientists choose exactly which spot to change." Snip touched it to a single rung of a DNA-ladder diagram, and a tiny light blinked. "Not just anywhere — a specific spot. Like a super-precise editor for life's instruction book. It's real, Pip. Right now, it helps farmers grow hardier crops, helps doctors study sickness, and helps treat real illnesses — sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia — in real people."

Pip's eyes went wide. "That's amazing."

"It is," Snip said — and then, gently, tapped the ethics-tracker, where a question glowed. "And it's powerful, which is why I never stop at 'can we?' I always ask 'should we — and who decides?' Fixing a sickness that causes real pain feels kind. But changing a living thing forever is a big, serious thing, and different people, families, and cultures answer these questions differently." Snip looked at Pip steadily. "I won't tell you the one right answer, because on the biggest questions there isn't a tidy one. My job is to make sure we never skip the asking."

Pip drifted out slowly, thoughtful, carrying both feelings at once — the wonder and the carefulness — the way you carry something breakable in two hands.

Snip set the little pen down gently and grew still. A big, careful feeling settled softly in Snip's chest — a mix of wonder and quiet respect. Being able to help, being able to heal: that felt hopeful and warm. But it also felt heavy, in the way important things do, and Snip wouldn't have wanted it any lighter. Snip breathed in slow, colors drifting calm and steady. That careful, caring feeling — wonder and carefulness, held together, neither one let go of — was, Snip thought, exactly the feeling worth keeping for a whole life long.
