01 Opening
Scribble beat 1 of 5

Scribble is a loopy, scribbly little drawing friend made of soft pencil lines that never quite sit still. Scribble's lines go wiggle-waggle, bumpity-bump, and that is exactly how Scribble likes them.

One afternoon a girl called Pip sits down to draw a cat. She draws a circle for the head. It comes out bumpy. She frowns, rubs it out, and draws it again. Still bumpy. She rubs it out again, so hard the paper gets a little hole.

"It's all wobbly," Pip says, and her shoulders go tight. "I can't draw."

Scribble hops onto the corner of the page. "Can I show you something?" Scribble asks. "Watch me draw a circle."

Scribble draws. The circle wobbles. It wiggles. It doesn't even quite join up at the end.

"That's wobbly too," says Pip, surprised.

"It is," says Scribble cheerfully. "Every line wobbles a bit. Mine do, my friends' do, and the lines of grown-up artists in big museums do too. A wobbly line isn't a mistake. It's just how drawing looks."

Pip looks at her bumpy circle again. "So I don't have to rub it out?"

"Nope," says Scribble. "Wobble first, and keep going. Watch what happens when you add the next bit."

So Pip leaves the bumpy circle and adds two pointy ears. Then a body. Then a long curly tail. And the strangest thing happens: the wobbly lines start to look like fur. Like a cat that is fluffy and a little bit cross. Like a real cat, really.

"It looks alive," Pip whispers.

"Wobbly lines look alive," says Scribble, doing a little loop-the-loop. "Perfectly straight lines look like a ruler made them. Yours look like YOU made them."

That is Scribble's big idea.

Wobble first. A wobbly line is how drawing looks, so keep on drawing.

Try it with a grown-up! Each of you draws a wobbly line on purpose, the wobbliest you can. Then turn your wobbly line into something: a snake, a wave, a mountain, a bumpy road. Whose line became the silliest thing?

When the drawing is finished, Pip pins it on the wall, bumps and wobbles and all. Scribble curls up beside it, loose and relaxed. "No rubbing out today," Scribble says with a happy sigh. "Just drawing."

Wobble first. Keep going. That's Scribble.

  2. Narrator: This drama uses an AI-generated voice. Voiced via Gemini 2.5.
  3. Narrator: Jun wants to draw his dog, Biscuit. He draws Biscuit's back. The line comes out wiggly. He reaches for the eraser.
  4. Jun: It's wobbly. Real dogs aren't wobbly.
  5. Scribble: Wait, wait! Before you rub it out, can I draw a dog too?
  6. Narrator: Scribble draws. The line goes wiggle-waggle, bumpity-bump, all the way along.
  7. Jun: Your line wobbles too.
  8. Scribble: Every drawer's lines wobble. Mine, yours, the people who draw the comics in your favourite books. Wobbly is just how drawing looks.
  9. Jun: So I don't have to start again?
  10. Scribble: Nope. Wobble first, and keep going. Add the next bit.
  11. Narrator: So Jun leaves the wobbly back. He adds four legs. They wobble. He adds floppy ears. They wobble. He adds a tail going round and round.
  12. Jun: He looks like he's shaking off water after a bath!
  13. Scribble: That's what Biscuit does! The wobble makes him look alive.
  14. Narrator: Jun hangs the drawing on the fridge, wobbles and all. And the next day, he draws Biscuit again, without the eraser.
  15. Narrator: Wobble first, then keep on drawing. Next time a line wobbles, try leaving it there, and drawing the next bit.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Scribble says: WOBBLE FIRST - a wobbly line is how …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Scribble says: WOBBLE FIRST - a wobbly line is how drawing looks, so keep on drawing!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

Circles together: 0
