01 Opening
Ovo beat 1 of 5

Ovo is a round, rolling drawing friend, smooth as an egg and bouncy as a ball. Ovo draws ovals and circles, and Ovo has a secret: ovals are hiding EVERYWHERE.

"I want to draw an owl," says Dev, "but owls are hard. They've got feathers and eyes and claws and everything."

Ovo rolls up beside him. "Let's not draw an owl yet," says Ovo. "Let's go on an oval hunt first."

02 Ovo
Ovo beat 2 of 5

Dev looks around. "An oval hunt?"

"Look at the owl in your book," says Ovo. "What's the biggest shape you can see?"

Dev squints at the picture. "Its body is kind of... tall and round."

"An oval!" says Ovo, delighted, and does a happy spin. "Draw a tall oval."

03 Ovo
Ovo beat 3 of 5

Dev draws a tall oval. It wobbles, and that's fine.

"Now what about its eyes?" asks Ovo.

"Two circles," says Dev, starting to smile. "Big ones." He draws them.

And there, on the paper, is the start of an owl. Not perfect, not finished, but very much an owl, staring out with two round eyes.

"Whoa," says Dev. "It's just ovals."

"That's my favourite thing," says Ovo. "Heads are ovals. Bodies are ovals. Eggs, wheels, faces, flower middles, fish. When something looks too hard to draw, I look for the oval hiding inside it. Then I start there."

Dev adds a little pointy beak and some feather tufts, and the owl is done. Then he looks up at the clock on the wall. "That's a circle." At his cup. "That's an oval from the top." At his friend's face. "Oval!"

"Now you've got oval eyes," laughs Ovo.

05 Closing
Ovo beat 5 of 5

That is Ovo's round idea.

Look for the oval hiding inside things, and start your drawing there.

Try it with a grown-up! Go on an oval hunt around the room or outside. Every time one of you spots an oval or a circle, say "Oval!" and point. Then pick one thing and draw it starting with its oval.

At the end of the day, Ovo rolls slowly to a stop on the edge of the page, round and calm. "The world is full of ovals," Ovo murmurs. "You just have to look."

Find the oval. Start there. That's Ovo.

  1. Narrator: From Spark and Anvil and DoodlePals — this is Ovo, in chapter 1 of the DoodlePals cast.
  2. Narrator: This drama uses an AI-generated voice. Voiced via Gemini 2.5.
  3. Narrator: Noa is at the park with her sketchbook. She wants to draw a duck on the pond. But the duck keeps moving, and ducks look tricky.
  4. Noa: Feathers, a beak, little feet. I don't know where to start.
  5. Ovo: Let's go on an oval hunt! Ovals hide inside everything. Look at the duck. What's the biggest shape?
  6. Noa: Its body. It's like a big egg lying down.
  7. Ovo: An oval! Draw a big oval lying on its side.
  8. Narrator: Noa draws a big oval. It's a bit lumpy, and that's fine.
  9. Ovo: Now the head. Is there an oval hiding there too?
  10. Noa: A little one, on top, at the front!
  11. Narrator: Noa draws a small oval for the head. Then a pointy beak. Then a tiny dot of an eye.
  12. Noa: It's a duck! It's really a duck!
  13. Ovo: You found its ovals first, and the duck grew out of them.
  14. Narrator: After that, Noa can't stop. The pigeon is two ovals. The bicycle wheels are circles. Even the dog chasing a ball is a long oval with a round head.
  15. Ovo: See? Ovals everywhere.
  16. Narrator: Look for the oval hiding inside. Next time you draw something tricky, find its biggest oval first, and start there.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Ovo says: look for the OVAL hiding inside things - heads, eggs, …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Ovo says: look for the OVAL hiding inside things - heads, eggs, wheels and bodies all start as ovals!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

Circles together: 0
