01 Opening
Rewinda and Samesby beat 1 of 5

On the first truly warm day of summer, the League Field holds its friendly race day. There are no trophies, and there is no big board of names climbing up or tumbling down. There are only pairs of friends racing each other on Minesweeper boards, and two helpers who move from pair to pair making sure that every race is fair: Samesby the penguin and Rewinda the squirrel.

Samesby waddles up to each pair in turn, his two identical boards held high in his flippers, his white front gleaming in the sun. Rewinda scampers along close behind him, her bushy russet tail curled over her back and her little film reel ready in her paws, waiting to be spun.

The players have a saying about the two of them. "Samesby makes it fair," they say, "and Rewinda makes it true." It sounds like one idea. It's actually two, and the day was about to show why both are needed.

This year, two young beavers named Twig and Dam signed up to race each other. They had been best friends for years, and serious rivals for exactly one week, ever since they'd discovered they were almost precisely as good as each other.

Samesby tapped out a race code and handed a copy to each of them. "Type this in," he said cheerfully. "You'll each get exactly the same board. The same mines, in the same places. The same numbers. Even the same free opening to start from. Whatever happens next, it's all about how you play. Neither of you can end up with a luckier board, because there's only one board. It just happens to be in two places."

They typed it in. Two identical boards appeared. The race began.

It was close from the very first click. Twig was quick, flying through the easy stretches. Dam was careful, a little slower at first, but checking every flag and never wasting a click. Near the very end, Dam spotted a clever chord and opened a whole ring of squares with a single click. Dam finished first, by the barest whisker.

"I won!" Dam shouted, leaping up.

Twig's flat tail slapped the ground hard. "No way. You must have gotten lucky somehow. Or you did something strange. I don't believe it."

Dam's face fell. Winning had felt wonderful for exactly two seconds, and now it felt as though something was being snatched away.

And here was the thing that race day always teaches. Samesby's race code had made the race completely fair. Both beavers had faced the identical board. But fair wasn't enough on its own, because Twig still didn't believe the result. Fairness is about the conditions of a race. Trust is about whether anyone can be sure of what actually happened in it. Those are different things, and a good race needs both.

That's when Rewinda scampered forward and gave her reel a spin. "Nobody needs to argue," she said. "Dam, the League gave you a replay token when you finished. May I have it?"

Dam handed it over, a short string of letters and numbers.

"This token holds the race board's seed, so the League can rebuild that exact board, and every move Dam made, in order," Rewinda explained. "So let's re-play it. We won't trust it, and we won't doubt it. We'll just watch it happen again."

She fed the token back into the League. The engine rebuilt the very same board from the seed, the one Samesby's code had created, and re-played Dam's moves one by one, exactly as they'd happened. Open. Open. Flag. Chord. The board cleared itself step by step, until the final square flipped over. The result appeared: board cleared, with exactly the number of clicks Dam had claimed.

Twig watched the whole replay in silence, and slowly the anger drained out of the young beaver. "So you really did it," Twig said. "On the very same board as me."

"On the very same board," said Samesby.

"And we checked it," said Rewinda. "Fair, and true."

Twig looked at Dam for a long moment. Then, surprising everyone, Twig grinned. "That chord at the end was amazing. Can you show me how you spotted it?"

Dam's face lit up all over again. The two friends bent over the board together, rivals turned back into friends, and Rewinda re-played the ending one more time, slowly, so Twig could see exactly where the chord had come from.

Samesby beamed at Rewinda across the grass. "A fair board and a real check," he said. "That's the whole recipe."

"And then friends again," said Rewinda, spinning her reel with a flourish.

Samesby and Rewinda feel most like themselves at the end of a race, when the replay matches and two rivals turn back into friends. It is a sunny, easy, everything-is-settled feeling, like a long game of tag ending in a heap of laughter on warm summer grass.

You have some of both of them in you whenever you make a contest fair, and then let the moves themselves prove the result. Say it the way they do: "Samesby gives the same board, Rewinda re-plays the moves: a fair race, checked for real."

Then race your friend, and check it together.
