The lamp on the far bench had gone out, and Phossa was already moving. She snatched an old-fashioned match off the rack, dragged its tip across the striking strip in one quick, sure motion — sssk — and a flame bloomed. She lit the lamp, shook the match out, and was halfway to the next dark corner before anyone had finished blinking.

Phossa was a small mouse-tween, warm russet-and-cream, and she couldn't quite hold still. Her tail twitched; her paws drummed the bench; her bright eyes flicked from a half-wired circuit to a coil of copper. A little bronze flame-charm, worn smooth from years of fidgeting, swung at her chest. But the restlessness wasn't nerves — it was a hum, a built-in readiness, the same quick energy that lived in the match she'd just struck.

"That flare?" she said, when a student asked how the match caught so fast. "That's a phosphorus compound on the tip. Phosphorus is made for releasing energy in a hurry." She held up the burnt matchstick like a tiny trophy. "I don't sit still because the thing I'm built around doesn't sit still. Energy that's ready to go the instant you need it — that's the whole point of me." And she was off again, relighting the room one quick spark at a time.

Phossa's family had been the spark-keepers of their old village, tending the communal fire so that any household whose hearth went cold could come and carry home an ember.

She still remembered the winter night she first minded the fire alone. A neighbor arrived shivering, hearth gone dead, and Phossa froze — fumbling, hesitating, unsure. The embers she handed over were half-cold by the time they reached the neighbor's house, and the family shivered through the dark. Her grandfather found her crying about it the next morning. "Fire doesn't wait," he told her, not unkindly. "The keeper who hesitates loses the moment, and the moment is the whole gift. You have to be quick before you feel ready."

So the next night she stayed sharp and coiled, watching the door. When a call came she was up instantly, embers glowing, flame passed along still hot — and that household's hearth roared back to life within the hour. She learned, at six, that energy is only worth anything if it's ready to move the instant it's called for. Restlessness wasn't a flaw. It was how you kept the warmth alive.

At twenty-two she scampered to the ChemQuest academy, where Beaker set out a cold lamp and a box of strange materials. "Show me phosphorus," he said.

Phossa didn't lecture. She struck a match — one fast flick — and lit the lamp, then held three fingers up to the light and joined her phosphorus to three hydrogens, building a wisp of PH₃ gas that drifted up smelling faintly of garlic. Then she spread her whole hand wide, all five fingers, and reached out to four oxygens at once, snapping together a phosphate group — five bonds where a moment ago there'd been three.

"Three bonds, or five — I can flex between them," she said, quick and clear, showing him both in the space of a breath. "The three-bond version is simple gas. The five-bond version is the one that runs life." She struck a second match just to punctuate it, the flame reflecting in Beaker's eyes.

Beaker watched the little mouse light his lamp, brew a garlic-scented gas, and forge a life-molecule inside a single minute, and he nodded. Nobody who could do all that in one breathless demonstration needed to explain it twice.

Phossa ran her workshop at a sprint, forever relighting things. She began her first lesson by flicking the flame-charm into the light and asking a student to count on their fingers alongside her.

"Watch my hand," she said, and held up three fingers. "One, two, three. That's phosphorus in simple stuff — PH₃, phosphine, smells like garlic if you ever meet it." Then she spread all five wide. "But now count these. One, two, three, four, five. Five bonds. That extra reach is what makes me the fuel of every living thing."

A quiet mouse in big glasses raised a paw. "Fuel? Like money?"

"Exactly like money!" Phossa spun to the screen. "Every cell in your body needs coins to spend — to twitch a muscle, fire a nerve, think a thought. The coin is called ATP." She traced a molecule with her paw: a chain of three phosphate groups, each a phosphorus atom ringed with oxygens. Then she gripped the end of the chain and snapped one phosphate off — clapping her paws together with a sharp crack. "That break is the spark! Energy flashes out, and the ATP becomes ADP, one phosphate lighter. Billions of those little cracks are firing inside you every single second. Every move, every thought — one of my bonds breaking."

She scampered along the bench, pointing. "And that five-bond reach shows up elsewhere too. It's the rail your DNA hangs on — sugar, phosphate, sugar, phosphate, all the way up the ladder. It's in the phospholipids that build the wall around every cell you've got, like the bricks and doorways of a tiny house."

Then she lifted a small sealed vial. Inside, a waxy white sliver glowed faintly. "This is white phosphorus — so eager to release energy it bursts into flame in open air above about thirty degrees Celsius. Old matches were built from phosphorus compounds for exactly that spark." She set it down firmly. "Industrial-grade only. Never a kitchen thing. But it proves my point — the spark isn't a figure of speech for me. It's literal."

As the room emptied, an eager badger lingered. "Is phosphorus chemistry hard, Phossa?"

Phossa was already halfway to a flickering candle, but she paused, flame-charm winking. "Not hard. Three bonds or five — flexible. The coin every cell spends. The strike that lights the match." She grinned. "Restless because I'm made to move the second I'm needed."

Her charm swung as she darted off to relight one more lamp. And feeling that bright, ready hum thrumming through her from nose to tail-tip, Phossa loved it — not restless-anxious, but restless-alive, buzzing with the joyful, coiled thrill of energy that can't wait to leap.
